Introduction to Applied Behavior Analysis for Educators
This two-credit, virtual, self-paced course provides K-12 educators, paraprofessionals, and school administrators with a comprehensive introduction to the principles and applications of applied behavior analysis as they relate to everyday classroom practices. Across seven sequentially built modules, participants will meet the course objectives through analysis of data examples, examination of literature, video instruction and observations, and written permanent products.
Throughout the course, each participant will develop materials that will cumulate into a Classroom Behavior Toolkit – a growing collection of data sheets, informational documents, and templates created throughout the modules. By the final module, this toolkit will serve as a comprehensive, personalized reference that the educator can utilize on a daily basis.
This course is the equivalent to 30 classroom hours (30 OPI professional development units), which is the equivalent of 2 university credits. This is a self-paced course, but do not expect to complete it in one sitting! Course participants must be comfortable working independently and be self-motivated to complete all work within the flexible time frame. WE RECOMMEND THAT YOU DON'T REGISTER FOR MORE THAN TWO COURSES AT ONE TIME.

THE COURSE PROCESS:

* The instructor will send an introductory email and you may begin the class.
* If you are taking the course for OPI professional development units, MTPLC will send you them upon completion of the semester.
* If you are taking the course for University credits, you will receive instructions on how to register for and pay the continuing education credit fee after you begin the course.
* Registrants have one year from the term of registration to complete their course.
Ex: If you register in June 2026, you have until May 15, 2027 to complete the course.
Obtaining copies of the books: Check your school /district or local library. Amazon and other online booksellers often have used copies available. The instructor is available to assist with locating copies, if needed.

Participants will:
- Describe student behavior using clear, objective, observable, and measurable terms, moving beyond subjective labels, assumptions, and personal bias.
- Describe the behavioral three-term contingency (antecedent–behavior–consequence) and apply it to formulate data-based hypotheses regarding the function of behavior.
- Analyze and interpret visual displays of behavioral data using appropriate terminology, including level, trend, and variability.
- Identify and explain the four primary functions of behavior (attention, escape/avoidance, access to tangibles/activities, and sensory).
- Distinguish between proactive (antecedent-based) and reactive (consequence-based) intervention strategies.
- Accurately differentiate between reinforcement and punishment, including the application of differential reinforcement procedures and four simple schedules of reinforcement (variable ratio, variable interval, fixed ratio, fixed interval).
- Describe and select appropriate behavioral measurement systems, including frequency, rate, duration, latency, inter-response time, and interval recording.
- Identify and describe functionally equivalent replacement behaviors.
