Educators today are facing unprecedented levels of stress and mental health challenges — both personally and in the classroom. As the demands on professional educators continue to grow, it’s essential to provide meaningful support. Join us this fall for a 4-part wellness series focused on understanding the impact of stress and trauma on the brain, and learning practical tools for emotional regulation. Each one-hour session is designed to support mental well-being and build resilience.

Instructor: Stacy G. York Nation, LCSW, Social Worker
Stacy is a licensed clinical social worker who got her start in school based mental health. She has a small private practice in Colorado and Wyoming. Stacy has spent the last several years traveling the country to train and educate professional educators on trauma-informed care. Stacy completed a grant project with Montana’s OPI that included the completion of a trauma-informed student handbook template. Stacy is familiar with the rural nature of Montana and all that goes with that in trying to meet the needs of a community. Stacy also serves as a Behavioral Health Officer in the Wyoming Army National Guard. This experience has provided Stacy with opportunities to work with higher level officials in problem solving hard, tough system issues.

Free registration is available to educators who fall into one of these categories:
1. You work for a school district that is a member of the Montana Small Schools Alliance (MSSA)
2. You work on an Indian Reservation or a border town school with majority Indian students
3. You work in a Class C school district. These scholarships are funded by our Stop School Violence grant.

Topic 1: Stress and the Brain                                                           09/03/025  4:00 PM-5:00 PM
Understanding the brain and how stress impacts the brain's functioning is critical for educators. This session will give a baseline understanding of how the brain functions and what happens when stress occurs. We work with the most critical organ in the human body. Understanding the relationship between stress and the brain is crucial.

Topic 2: The Stress Cycle                                                                     09/17/2025  4:00 PM-5:00 PM
Pop culture talks a lot about stress management. We cannot go through life without stress. What's more important than stress management? Understanding the stress cycle and how to complete it. As educators, you encounter students in the midst of stress cycles all day. This session will give you strategies to help your students (and yourself) complete their stress cycles.

Topic 3: The effects of Trauma on Brain Functioning                       10/01/2025    4:00 PM-5:00 PM
Trauma is a frequently used word with minimal understanding. In this session, we will learn what trauma is, how it relates to stress, and the impact of trauma on the brain. We will also learn how to mitigate those effects and move students towards resiliency, emotional regulation, and healing.

Topic 4: Regulation Techniques                                                             10/15/2025      4:00 PM-5:00 PM
All educators need as many tools in their toolbox as possible. This session will focus on the science behind regulation techniques and the endless options we have at our fingertips, once we understand the brain.
