Facilitator Bio:
Dr. Genevieve Thomas is a literacy consultant based in Northwest Montana. Her career in education includes roles as a special education teacher, school psychologist, and district-level special education leader. She now designs and delivers professional learning focused on evidence-based literacy instruction, curriculum development, and MTSS implementation. Genevieve holds master’s degrees in Special Education and School Psychology, and a Doctorate in Education with an emphasis in Reading Science. Outside of her work in schools, you can usually find her enjoying Northwest Montana on her bike or skis, depending on the season.

Workshop Description/Objectives:
Join facilitator Genevieve Thomas for a three-hour virtual introduction to explicit instruction. This workshop will define explicit instruction and explore how it supports all learners in moving from “novice” to “expert” with the skills and content educators teach every day. Participants will learn the core elements of explicit instruction, examine explicit lesson design, and see explicit instruction in action. Through guided analysis, they will unpack what makes it effective in practice. Emphasis will be placed on low-lift, high-yield strategies, including increasing opportunities to respond, providing specific feedback, and designing purposeful practice.
