Facilitator: Genevieve Thomas
Over her 20-year career in education, Genevieve Thomas has served as a special education teacher, literacy specialist, instructional coach, school psychologist, and special education leader. She holds graduate degrees in Special Education and School Psychology from Loyola Marymount University and is currently a doctoral student in the Reading Science Program at Mount St. Joseph University. Genevieve also serves as the secretary of the Montana chapter of The Reading League.
When not supporting educators, Genevieve enjoys skiing or biking in Whitefish, MT—depending on the season.

In this full-day, in-person workshop, participants will explore the elements and principles of Explicit Instruction as outlined by Archer & Hughes (2007). This evidence-based approach emphasizes purposeful lesson design, active engagement, and structured practice.

- Define and describe the core components of explicit instruction
- Identify explicit instruction in video and live models
- Practice designing effective lessons targeting skills, strategies, vocabulary, and background knowledge
- Understand the role of feedback in instruction and identify effective feedback practices
- Explore types of practice and design appropriate student practice activities
