Supporting Students Through Behavior, Intervention, and Collaboration:
A Guide for Paraprofessionals and Support Personnel

This virtual, self-paced course provides K–12 paraprofessionals, substitute teachers, classroom aides, support staff, and new educators with practical, foundational knowledge to better support student success in educational settings. Participants will develop an understanding of educational support systems, including Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), 504 Plans, Behavior Intervention Plans (BIPs), progress monitoring, data collection, collaboration, and effective communication practices. Throughout the course, participants will build skills that can be immediately applied in classrooms and student support environments.

This course is especially valuable for support staff, substitutes, classroom aides, and new teachers seeking a stronger understanding of special education supports, behavior intervention strategies, and their role in supporting students academically, behaviorally, and socially. Whether you are new to education or looking to strengthen your current practices, this course provides practical tools and resources that can be used right away.

Participants will complete five sequential modules addressing:
  • Understanding IEPs, 504 Plans, accommodations, modifications, and educational support systems.
  • Behavior Intervention Plans and the role of support staff in implementation.
  • Progress monitoring, data collection, implementation fidelity, and collaboration.
  • The ABCs and functions of behavior, proactive supports, and function-based interventions.
  • Reflection and application of learning to daily educational practice.

This course is the equivalent of 5 OPI Professional Development Units. The course is self-paced, allowing participants to complete coursework on their own schedule. Participants should be comfortable working independently and motivated to complete all course requirements within the flexible time frame.
