From Standard to Practice
Teaching Math K-12 Using the Standards for Mathematical Practice
This three-credit, virtual, self-paced course moves from learning about the Standards for Mathematical Practice to rehearsing them and receiving feedback on implementing them in practice. This course is intended for K-12 classroom teachers teaching mathematics. Every module includes examples from both an elementary and a secondary classroom, so participants can work on the same practice standard regardless of the grade they teach.
Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of the course, participants will:
• Distinguish the Standards for Mathematical Practice from the Mathematical Content Standards and explain why both are necessary for student proficiency and mathematical engagement.
• Identify how each of the eight practices looks in either an elementary classroom or in a secondary classroom.
• Rehearse and receive feedback on facilitating sense-making, persistence, and precise mathematical language in real time (MP1, MP6).
• Rehearse and receive feedback on facilitating mathematical argument and critique of reasoning (MP2, MP3).
• Design tasks, select tools, and receive feedback on supporting modeling and strategic tool use (MP4, MP5).
• Design tasks and receive feedback on designing sequences that surface mathematical structure and repeated reasoning (MP7, MP8).
• Integrate at least three of the four practice standard pairs into a single taught lesson and evaluate the resulting shift in practice against a baseline assessment from the beginning of the course.
This course is the equivalent to 45 classroom hours (45 OPI professional development units), which is the equivalent of 3 university credits. This is a self-paced course, but do not expect to complete it in one sitting! Course participants must be comfortable working independently and be self-motivated to complete all work within the flexible time frame. WE RECOMMEND THAT YOU DON'T REGISTER FOR MORE THAN TWO COURSES AT ONE TIME.

45 OPI Professional Development Units or 3 Semester Credits *Pending Course approval from U of M (semester credit is offered through the University of Montana and is an additional fee of $175; registration forms available in the course Moodle.)
Cost savings:
Three online U of M Undergraduate credits would cost you $988. Three online U of M Graduate credits would cost you $1,171. MTPLC's courses save you 42% and 51% respectively.
*MTPLC's courses can't be used towards a degree program. They CAN be used for salary schedules and license renewal.
THE COURSE PROCESS:

* Within a few days, you will receive an invoice via email.
* Pay the invoice/registration fee (online or by check) in order to begin.
* You will receive a username and password and steps to access the Moodle course.
* The instructor will send an introductory email and you may begin the class.
* If you are taking the course for OPI professional development units, MTPLC will send you them upon completion of the semester.
* If you are taking the course for University credits, you will receive instructions on how to register for and pay the continuing education credit fee after you begin the course. *This course is pending approval for U of M credits.
* Registrants have one year from the term of registration to complete their course.
Ex: If you register in June 2026, you have until May 15, 2027 to complete the course.
