This professional learning series is designed to build participants’ understanding of dyslexia and the characteristics commonly associated with it. Across four sessions, participants will explore what dyslexia is, how to identify key indicators in students, and practical strategies to support learners with dyslexic characteristics in educational settings. The final session will provide an opportunity for case consultation and discussion of participant questions, including student-specific considerations.

Session 1: What Is Dyslexia?

Description: This session provides an overview of dyslexia, including current definitions, myths vs. facts, and the neurological basis of dyslexia. Participants will explore common characteristics and how dyslexia impacts reading, writing, and learning.
Session 2: Identifying Dyslexia in Students

Description: This session focuses on recognizing key indicators of dyslexia across grade levels. Participants will learn how to distinguish dyslexia from other learning challenges and review screening tools and observation strategies.
Session 3: Supporting Learners with Dyslexic Characteristics

Description: Participants will learn practical, evidence-based strategies to support students with dyslexic characteristics. Topics include instructional approaches, accommodations, and ways to increase student engagement and success.
Session 4: Dyslexia Case Consultation

Description: This interactive session provides an opportunity for participants to discuss specific student scenarios, ask questions, and receive guidance. Emphasis will be on problem-solving and applying learning from previous sessions.

Educational Cooperative of the Rockies (EdCorColorado.com) is a team of educators passionate about helping students and families achieve the results they are seeking for their children. With more than 50 collective years of experience in education, the team is committed to supporting families and school personnel in both public and private school settings.
Leslie Gaiser is a special education teacher and educational consultant. She holds a Master’s degree in Special Education and an Educational Specialist degree in School Administration, along with an endorsement as a Special Education Director. Leslie has worked in education for more than 20 years, serving students across grade levels and ability levels.
She provides consultation to school teams supporting students with disabilities who are experiencing difficulty accessing educational settings due to academic or behavioral needs. Leslie also delivers targeted professional development in special education practices, literacy strategies, math strategies, twice-exceptional learners, behavior supports, and executive function strategies. More recently, she has incorporated technology to deliver effective online instruction that increases engagement and motivation.
