Workshop Overview:
1. Session 1: May 5 (4-5 PM) Dyslexia 101
Dyslexia is a condition of neurodevelopmental origin that mainly affects the ease with which a person
reads, writes and spells, typically recognized as a specific learning disorder in children.
In this session we will explore the foundations of not just Dyslexia, but also Dyscalculia and
Dysgraphia. How do these disorders impact learning? We will explore how the umbrella of these
disorders are more than just reversing letters, numbers etc. Through this session, we will gain a strong
understanding of how Dyslexia, Dysgraphia and Dyscalculia impacts a student’s ability to become a
proficient reader, mathematician and writer.
2. Session 2: May 12 (4-5PM) Assessing for Dyslexia and Similar Disorders
How do we determine if a student has Dyslexia or a similar disorder? There are many ways to
determine if a student may have dyslexia, dysgraphia or dyscalculia. In this session we will
explore the assessment of these disorders. We will look at the state criteria for special education
for a student who may have Dyslexia, Dysgraphia or Dyscalculia. We will explore the options for
students who do not qualify for special education services but still have one of these disorders.
3. Session 3. May 19 (4-5 PM) Interventions and supports for students with Dyslexia and similar
disorders.
Just because a student has dyslexia or a similar disorder, does not mean they automatically
qualify for special education. In this final workshop, we will explore different interventions,
accommodations and supports that can be given to a student who has dyslexia or a similar
disorder. You will come away with a toolkit of options to help support students whether they
meet the criteria for special education or not.
