Understanding Behavior &
Supporting Students

with Ashley Campbell, MA, BCBA

Virtual

Date:   📅 Friday, October 16, 2026
Time:   🕒  9:00 AM–12:00 PM MT
Location: Virtual
3 Hours | 3 OPI Renewal Units

Supporting student behavior is a team effort. Whether you are a paraprofessional, teacher, instructional aide, special education staff member, behavior support staff, or another professional working directly with students, your observations, communication, and consistent implementation of supports can make a meaningful difference.

Join Ashley Campbell, MA, BCBA, for this practical three-hour virtual workshop designed to help school staff better understand why behavior occurs, how behavior is assessed, and how each member of the student support team contributes to effective behavior intervention.

Participants will explore the basics of identifying and objectively describing behavior, recognizing the functions of behavior, collecting meaningful information such as ABC data, and understanding how a Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA) informs the development of an individualized Behavior Intervention Plan (BIP).

The workshop will then move from understanding the plan to putting it into practice. Participants will examine their role in implementing prevention strategies, teaching and reinforcing replacement behaviors, responding consistently to challenging behavior, and providing meaningful feedback about what is—and is not—working.

A key focus will be communication and collaboration. Participants will learn how to share objective observations and concerns with teachers, BCBAs, school psychologists, and other team members; ask for clarification when a strategy is unclear; and recognize when additional modeling, training, or support is needed.

Participants will learn how to:
  • Understand basic functions of behavior and recognize patterns that may help explain why behavior occurs.
  • Describe student behavior objectively and distinguish observations from assumptions.
  • Collect and communicate meaningful behavioral information, including ABC data.
  • Understand the connection between an FBA and an individualized BIP.
  • Identify their role in implementing prevention, replacement behavior, reinforcement, and response strategies.
  • Recognize when clarification, modeling, training, or additional support is needed.
  • Communicate observations, concerns, and student needs clearly and professionally.
  • Provide useful feedback to the student support team about implementation and student progress.

Target Audience:
Paraprofessionals, teachers, special education staff, instructional aides, behavior support staff, related service providers, and other school personnel who support students or assist with implementing behavior supports.

Resources Provided to Registrants:
