8:00 AM-4:00 PM MT

Instructor:
Brendan Murphy

Brendan Murphy has taught for the last 31 years at the college, high school and middle school levels.  He is a former National Leader for the College Board and is an endorsed consultant for AP Calculus AB/BC, AP Statistics, and AP Precalculus.  In 2007 he was the Awardee for the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching in Maine.  In 2005, Brendan was a finalist for the Maine Teacher of the Year and was a 2005 Siemens Award Winner for Advanced Placement.  Brendan was awarded the 2010 Academic Leadership Award from the College Board and is a former member of the SAT Math Test Development Committee and APAC Steering Committee. Brendan served as the Chair of the College Board SAT Subject Mathematics Test Development Committee and he was awarded the 2015 Mathematics Teacher of the Year by the University of Maine Pulp and Paper Foundation. For three years Brendan was the Chair of the College Board’s Math Academic Advisory Committee for all of their different mathematics programs. Brendan recently cycled off the AP Calculus Test Development Committee after a five year tenure and was also on a committee to re-design the scoring guidelines for all new AP Calculus syllabi that are submitted to the College Board under the AP Audit. Brendan is currently on the AP Precalculus Test Development Committee and helped to design this new AP math course.

Brendan has run weeklong summer institutes in AP Calculus AB, AP Calculus BC, AP Statistics, and Vertical Teams/Pre-AP Math.  He has presented numerous workshops for the College Board around the country, as well as being a speaker at many state and national conferences.  Brendan has presented AP workshops for the College Board in twelve countries around the world. For nine years Brendan ran a mentoring program for new AP Statistics teachers across Maine for the Maine Department of Education.  He is currently an approved Reader/Table Leader/QTM for AP Calculus and a former Table Leader and Reader for the AP Statistics Exam.  He is a leader in distance learning and was featured in Newsweek magazine in the May 16, 2005 issue.  Brendan helped pilot an online virtual AP Calculus BC class for students in Maine for the Maine Department of Education/UMPI and has taught both AB and BC Calculus online for the last fourteen years. Currently he has over 180 AP Calculus podcasts uploaded to iTunes University free of charge for anyone to view and use.

Brendan has a BSCE from Tufts University as well as an MBA from Bentley University.  He has a house in Orrington, Maine and in his spare time is a licensed whitewater raft guide.  He enjoys traveling (51 countries and counting) with his wife and has rafted on 77 rivers in five countries.  Brendan is currently teaching at John Bapst Memorial High School in Bangor, Maine.

During this AP Precalculus APSI, you’ll explore the course framework, the exam, and the new AP resources that will help you plan and focus instruction—and give you feedback throughout the year on the areas where individual students need additional focus. You’ll also learn about completing the digital activation process at the start of the school year that will give you immediate access to the new resources and will help ensure that your students can register for AP Exams by the new fall deadlines. By attending this APSI, you’ll gain deeper insight into the following key takeaways, among several others: Understand the Course; Plan the Course; Teach the Course; Assess Student Progress; and Engage as a Member of the AP Community. In addition, specific attention will be paid to the following AP Classroom resources: unit guides, personal progress checks, AP teacher community, and the AP question bank.
